Finally! Winter has given up her fight and the golf season has now arrived. The golf staff is looking forward to the creating improved product offerings for you and has been working hard to improve both the facilities and our curriculums.

The Course and Practice Facility are scheduled to open this Saturday, May 10 for the 2014 season. One of our major Capital Improvements has been the renovation, or should I say restoration, of the golf shop returning it to its original look of a 1780 farm house. The shop restoration is scheduled to be completed around May 18thand will most definitely appeal to your eye! With a few finishing touches needing to take place, for now, registration will be conducted at the check in desk in the Trophy room.

Another of the Clubs Capital Projects – The Upper Practice teeing area has grown in nicely. However to allow some time for additional root structure growth we will be utilizing the south end of the practice area. Practice balls will be available in the ‘Bag Drop’ building which has been relocated to the lower lot. We are happy to report that the course came through the winter well, a few green complex’s will remain partially covered due to ice damage and shall be treated as Ground Under Repair. You will notice the extensive tree work that has taken place throughout the winter months; most noticeably between the 10th and 18th holes. Additional plans are in place for course beautification and course improvements that will not only enhance our spectacular vistas but also improve the playability.

In addition to our Capital improvements we have a number of staffing changes that will surely enhance the SCC experience. We have worked hard to develop a philosophy of operating Stowe Mountain Resort’s 36-holes of golf as unified group and while there are two unique golf experiences, we promise a commitment to improved conditions and enhanced experiences by everyone who calls Stowe their home.

For those of you new to Stowe, our operation is led by Director of Golf Ron Philo Jr. Ron has enjoyed a luminous playing and teaching career, winning dozens of regional and national titles. He comes from a long lineage of golfers, including LPGA player and sister, Laura Diaz. Also joining him this summer will be his farther, Ron Philo Sr., who along with Academy Professional Sue Horton will play key roles in our Golf Academy. Ron Sr. has over 50 years of expertise in the PGA and is a terrific addition to our team.

Another addition to our Management Staff is Scottie Nield. Scottie is a native Scotsman and has most recently worked at the prestigious Inverness Club in Chicago. Prior to Inverness his experience includes Hudson National Golf Club and Hamilton Farm Golf Club both in the Tri-State area. Additional members to this year’s Professional Staff are Topher Harlow and Ross Pawlack both long standing Stowe Mountain Club Assistant Golf Professionals. Both Topher and Ross are very experienced and have a keen awareness of Stowe CC. Michael Taylor rounds out the golf professional staff; Michael has already achieved his PGA Class A status and joins our team as he is completes his final internship in the Professional Golf Management Program at Florida State University.

A key to golf maintenance and sustainability here is Kevin Komer, who has been promoted from Stowe Mountain Club Superintendent to Stowe Golf Head of Agronomy. Kevin will oversee maintenance operations for both The Mountain and Village courses. He has served as president of the GCSAA Vermont Chapter and is a highly respected resource within his profession. Kevin spearheaded a program in cooperation with the VT Department of Conservation to promote public recognition of environmental excellence for golf courses called ‘The Vermont Business Environmental Partnership for Golf Courses.’ As a leader in this program, the Stowe Mountain Club Golf Course became one of the first to complete the program and earn the distinction of ‘Green Links.’ You can learn more about Kevin and get a glimpse into the inner workings of course maintenance by following his BLOG.

It’s hard to imagine but this September marks my 24th season working at Stowe. I have never been more excited about a golfing season and the continued growth of the Stowe Golf Program. We look forward to seeing you at the club soon.

Sincerely,

Joshua Nicholls
