Thank you SCC Members!

We are excited for the heart of the season to get underway. We had a very nice May with unseasonably warm stretches, as well as some unseasonably cold patches, and as the saying goes – if you don’t like the weather in Vermont, wait 5 minutes. Despite the temperature fluctuations, we have had very little of the dreaded ‘R’ word and that has helped our talented maintenance staff get the course in mid-season shape.

One thing is guaranteed, soon schools will be out and the town will be full of visitors who come to Stowe to enjoy the area and all it offers. We have a busy season of events & programs planned for you, but first, let’s look at some results from the spring:

Memorial Day Scramble

We had a record turnout for our Memorial Day Scramble with 85 golfers participating. It was a gorgeous day to be on the links and the course was in top form. This no pressure event is a great opportunity to shake the rust off your golf game after the long winter. The shot-gun start began at 9:00 with an awards luncheon following.

The field of golfers was broken into two divisions depending on their competitive nature. The winners of the top division, with a score of 56, were Chris Mancini’s team of Bill Diemar, Rich Sullivan and Greg Gramas. Runners up in the division were James Keravich, Kelly Keravich, and Flynn Kearney who finished with 57. The participants in the non-competitive flight had just as much fun and had some great scores to show as well. First place went to the team of Mike Hickey, Riley Hickey, Kelly Hickey, and Jack Hickey with a score of 64; followed closely by the team of Lionel Fay, Susan Fay, Walt Towslee and Bert Peterson with a score of 66.

1st Member Social

The first Member Social of the season was held on Saturday, June 4th. The 9 hole tournament is essentially an appetizer for the wonderful meal put on by Stowe Mountain Club Executive Chef Chris Stephens and his staff. The Italian themed dinner featured his legendary Bolognese, Chicken Piccatta, and Eggplant Caponata.

The event saw the team of Mike and his daughter Sazie Eagan, David Longfritz, Paul Thabault and his wife Nancy Money take home the Gross top spot with a score of 31. The team of Jordon Plummer, Jozlyn Plummer, James Carroll & Oliver Twombly followed with a Net score of 30. Closest to the Hole winners were Jerrine Gangas, and David Longfritz; Long Drive winners were Ellen Sundquist & George Spraker.

DIII High School

Congrats to Stowe High School for winning the Division III State Golf High School Championship. The medalist honors went into a playoff after Stowe's Flynn Kearney and Ryan Landgraf of Rivendell each carded an 84. Landgraf won the playoff on the first hole to become the D-3 medalist, but Kearney and Stowe win the team title.

Goals & Objectives

Here at the resort, there is much to be excited about. The Spruce Peak Village Center will open for the summer season on June 24th, which includes the new Stowe Mountain Club Alpine Clubhouse and Adventure Center, with its Stowe Rocks indoor rock climbing, child care and Canteen Restaurant. The Village Center will be brought to life by a full schedule of activities in the Pavilion and on the Village Green, including Farmer’s Markets every Friday throughout July and August. Make plans to come up and experience all the exciting programming and activity happening at Spruce Peak this summer. While you are there, stop by the new home for Stowe Mountain Club, the Alpine Clubhouse featuring Club Concierge, member only underground parking garage, luxurious locker room, Audubon board room, and private dining rooms.

At Stowe Country Club we’re elated about the ongoing improvements to the course. The conditions to start the season have never been better. Head of Golf Grounds Kevin Komer and SCC Head Superintendent Mark Finch are to be congratulated on their success and exceptional effort their teams are making to continue the progress. Please show them your appreciation and respect by filling divots with the sand bottles on your cart, fixing ball marks, and raking bunkers.

This effort has involved more than just hard work. Stowe Mountain Resort and Stowe Mountain Club have made significant investments relative to these efforts.

Our top-line strategies at Stowe Country Club are:
  • To provide members of the Stowe Community with a seasonal and daily fee golf product that is competitively priced in this market and represents good value
  • To provide the members of Stowe Mountain Club with a quality practice area and second quality golf course experience
  • To provide guests of Stowe Mountain Lodge with a second quality golf experience with the goal being to encourage them to stay multiple nights
  • To provide guests visiting the greater Stowe Community with a quality golf experience and expose them to the standards of quality associated with the Stowe Mountain Resort brand Create a harmonious recreational environment for every SCC constituency

Balancing these initiatives is never easy. Please support our community by acting as a good host when visitors join us by doing things like; inviting single players or groups of two to join you or your group.

Membership Initiatives

This season, in response to lagging demand, a new-member promotion for individuals who have not been a member of SCC in the past eight years was introduced. A new Young Adult promotion also was introduced this year. Most reports indicate waning interest in golf by the millennials, and this promotion is targeted at introducing them to the great game of golf and the great people who play it. Both programs have had good response and your help is needed to welcome these folks and show them why they should plan to return next year.

The Social Membership has also proven to be a popular option. Social Members have full use of the practice facility, can select to participate in Men’s or Ladies Nights, can participate in the SGA Social Events, and receive the 10 half price rounds. This has proven a great option for those unsure about how much golf they anticipate during the season.

Also available is the ability to purchase rounds of golf in multiples of 10 for a reduced price. This is another great option for those unsure about their summer plans. Those exercising this option can pay the SGA Fee and participate in Club Events and Socials.

Tee Times

When making tee times, please remember the value these spaces on the tee sheet represent and only reserve for the size group you can be certain to fill. Also be ready to provide the names of all the players in the group. Members and SML Guests may make tee times up to 30 days in advance; the public is limited to 14 days advance reservations. The revenue from a full tee sheet is what funds the operation and improvements.
